16.10 not working with dual screen

Thirded. I can go to 16.04, and my HDMI screen stops working (I have
HDMI and display port on my Intel NUC); if I boot back to 14.x, it works
great. More interestingly: it appears to be kernel related, because if I
boot the 14.x kernel in 16.04, it's still happy. 16.10 seems to work
most of the time, though I still had issues a day or two ago.

I can boot into 14.04 where there is no problem, or 16.04 where it's hard to get any monitors to work after they shut off from inactivity. There are other problems as well. This doesn't seem exactly what you're seeing, but could be another symptom of a similar underyling thing.
