Assuming Tim planned to run a Windows guest in the VM, then wine could
be used instead, but not all Windows apps run when using wine. I'm using
VBox, because the version of iTunes I needed, didn't run when using
wine. An app might run today, when using wine, but the next required
update might not work with wine anymore. I stay with VBox for newer
versions of iTunes. Btw. I'm to lazy to use something else, but VBox,
if Tim shouldn't be lazy, another VM might be better than VBox, but
requires some effort to set up vnc for the display and samba to share
folders. The weak point of VBox is USB, about one in two syncs
fails, using USB to sync with my tablet PC. USB mouse isn't an issue,
since it's done by the host. Mouse integration, rendering the mouse by
the host, could be an issue when using VBox, too, yet perhaps not when
using Ubuntu. Anyway, VBox has got a few pitfalls, it's just very easy
to set up. I needed to restore the guest from a backup, after VBox or
the guest crashed.

Ralf
