I didn't read the whole thread, I just skim through a few mails. Apart
from the issue that file managers might want to handle the desktop,
which seems to be unrelated to this thread, another issue could be that
gvfs and the KDE equivalent or other similar bad coded mechanism get in
each other's way. Some of those things might be services, that could be
disabled. It doesn't harm simply to disable all unneeded services, even
if they shouldn't cause issues. Note, by default Ubuntu auto-starts
everything that is part of a package and could be auto-started.
