It is true, perhaps it was not stated with enough emphasis.

After having problems and checking the net AFTER the install, I see
several places which say this is not a good idea. When I saw it
suggested on the Ubuntu website, though, I thought that was an
authoritative opinion I could trust and followed their suggestion. I
did not check more at that time. Big mistake...

It would be good if they did NOT suggest doing it! Unfortunately I
don't remember the exact page that suggested it. I happened upon it
when I was looking for some of the upgraded/replaced KDE pgms to run
under Ubuntu. Looked like a good way to take care of everything in one
shot - with not a hint of any problems - so I did what they suggested.
