bluetooth USB adapter troubleshooting

On a lower level, I can see the bluetooth hardware:

but on a higher level, sure, I can click the GUI to configure the
bluetooth adapter.
However, it doesn't seem to actually work with the BT gadgets I have.
It shows as paired, but as not. The GUI shows that the pairing
failed, fine, but then shows that the speaker is paired. It's not.
How do I even troubleshoot that?
