Upfrading from Ubuntu 14.03 to Ubuntu 16.0

I installed WINE a few days ago and got what sounds like the same
dialogue about fonts. The dialogue I saw was in a terminal window
though - I didn't click, I tabbed until "OK" was highlighted, then
pressed ENTER. I don't know if the dialogue was mouse aware.

Could it be as simple as that?

That sounds as if either the username or the password are not what you
expect them to be, and are thus not what you are typing in...
