If you can't afford a large SSD fit something like a 40GB SSD and put
the system on there, then put /home on a separate HDD.  The difference
with booting and loading apps such as Firefox is astonishing.  My
Intel i5 with 4GB RAM boots to Unity in 15 seconds!
