Er, no. Not even remotely. Not even a tiny little bit.
Why not? Because I absolutely do not believe that these are "ordinary"
things that "the average home user" does.
Running a local email client isn't even something ordinary these days
-- more and more people are on webmail of some form.
Consider the success of Chromebooks.
The main use for a computer today is browsing the web. That covers
email, chat, basic-level picture editing and much more these days.
So, whereas having >8GB of RAM may well help somewhat with high-end
high-res image or sound work, say, and I'm sure helps with multiple
VMs and video editing, I contend that those are *not* things ordinary
people do.
