I suspect that you will in fact have an easier time editing sources.list
by hand to point to lucid, then update/dist-upgrade, resolve any
problems arising from that, reboot, and make sure it all works; then
lather, rinse, and repeat to get to precise (though possibly
do-release-upgrade would work for this step). Once you're there you
should have an easier time getting to trusty.
It should be perfectly possible to do this without needing to reinstall,
though it will probably take a bit of time and effort.
