Button 4 (#8) on trackball, now seen as button 2

I've got Ubuntu 16.10 running as a guest in Virtualbox (current),
on a Mac OSX 10.10.5 host. Uses a Kensington Expert Mouse USB trackball,
the one with the scroll ring.

Bottom left button is normal left, XEV shows as button 1.

Bottom right is normal right, shows as button 3

Top left is normal middle, shows as 2.

However, the top right used to act a a Back button (for web browsing &
such) should be 8, but xev now shows it as 2, and it acts that way.

A Logitech trackball in the same machine shows all 4 buttons working as
expected.

For Virtualbox, I've tried all 3 options - PS/2 mouse, Trackpad, and
Multi-Touch Trackpad. No changes.

When I try the 2 top buttons on a RDP session to a Windows machine, they
don't do the same actions.

Is there something like xev for Mac OSX?
