Hi,
I changed the subject, but kept the thread, because you more likely get
a reply from somebody familiar with sddm, by mentioning the display
manager.
Please post the output of
ls -l /usr/share/xsessions/
and
grep SessionDir /etc/sddm.conf
Note, I'm not using and never used sddm, I only checked the man page
http://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/xenial/man5/sddm.conf.5.html
If nobody from this mailing list should be able to help you, then
consider to ask Kubuntu related questions at
https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/kubuntu-users
and/or
https://mail.kde.org/mailman/listinfo/kde-linux
I even didn't know that kdm was replaced by sddm. It's KDE related,
since it's the KDE session manager. It doesn't matter that you want to
start another desktop environment session.
You clicked all available icons of the greeter and no menu that opened
showed a session? What is shown by a left-click or right-click, if the
mouse cursor hovers somewhere on the screen? IOW if it doesn't hover
over an icon and not over any other widget.
Regards,
Ralf
