I'm the OP. I was just surprised, that's all, at being presented with
dialogue about upgrading not-OS software during an OS-software upgrade
(being used to dealing with BSD where the OS is this thing but ports are
something else).
I can appreciate having to recompile installed software after an ABI
change that comes as part of a major revision increment - the problem is
I can see no way of doing that yet maintaining the same version (or even
the same branch) of other_installed_software, like php.
I'll freely admit that my knowledge of linux and ubuntu in particular is
a lot less than what I'd like. Basically I'm asking "how do I do this,
can it be done, what's the workaround if not" and not "ubuntu is crap
because"
