You might want to give LO 5.x a spin to see if it reacts the same on 14.04:

3.13.0-85-generic #129-Ubuntu SMP Thu Mar 17 20:50:15 UTC 2016 x86_64

~$ apt-cache policy libreoffice
libreoffice:

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/libreoffice/ppa/ubuntu trusty main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/libreoffice/ppa/ubuntu trusty main

To return to the LibreOffice version from the main archive, use
ppa-purge. see:

for details

If you'd like, send me a test spreadsheet directly and I'll see if I can
reproduce on 14.04 LO 5.1.2.2
