yes, cinnamon used to require patches in gtk ... back when cinnamon
wasn't in the archives mint did patch the libs but didn't bump the major
version so package dependencies wouldn't reflect the difference as they
should and gtk based binaries in the archive could show weird behavior
and unexepected breakage when installed on mint systems because they
were not re-compiled against the changed libs ...

i think they do that a lot less nowadays though ... sadly canonical got
all the grief and bad press for asking them to recompile the binaries in
such cases where it tried to protect the users ... but lets not re-vive
these topics they are gone and over nowadays (i hope)
