Mint is based on Ubuntu. Most of the repositories used for it are the
Ubuntu ones. So yes, definitely an Ubuntu Flavour.

In what way is Linux Mint a 'freakish distro'? According to
distrowatch.com, it's been the most popular distro for the last 12
months! Ubuntu is at number 3!
And given it is based on Ubuntu, why not ask for help on an Ubuntu
mailing list? Seems quite legitimate to me.
