You're right, but less traffic always could be caused if Firefox is
opened, even when it's not used. I chose Firefox just as an example to
raise Bret's awareness for apps that cause traffic, even if it isn't
expected.
Much traffic could be caused by something updating the package index,
running in the background or by many cronjobs each causing less
traffic, but all together causing much traffic.
I would run
$ ls -l /etc/cron*
and then take a look at each.
I would disable popcon and other
$ sudo dpkg-reconfigure popularity-contest
...
