cdrom problems

I'm having cdrom problems with my Ubuntu 15.04 install.

I can see the contents of a CD (both text and audio) via an application
like caja, but cannot see how to list a text CD from the command line
reliably. I tried
           sudo mount /dev/cdrom -t iso9660 /media/cdrom
but although it mounts OK, it doesn't get mounted at /media/cdrom but at
some unpredictable point under /media/<username>/
           ls /media/cdrom
doesn't give anything. So how can a script or program know where to look?
When I insert an audio CD it is clearly detected by caja and k3b but not by
all programs.

How can I force all cdroms to be mounted at a known point? This is
important because other programs (e.g. those running under wine - Crossover
actually - need to know where to look for the cdrom, at present they can't see it).

- Richard.
