How to determine what to delete in a partition to install Ubuntu,

[sudo] password for dick:
dick at dick-desktop:~$ ~/post-it.txt

dick at dick-desktop:~$ sudo ~/post-it.txt
sudo: /home/dick/post-it.txt: command not found
dick at dick-desktop:~$

I get "Permission Denied" Tried doing root/sudo but still got no post.
