Are you sure the problem is with LightDM and not in the PAM config?
I've had a quick search through the LightDM mailing list archives, and
haven't found anything that would indicate LightDM doesn't work with
Kerberos. That could of course be because it hasn't been done before,
but that would surprise me.
You could try to post some details about your problems here and/or on
the LightDM list, in hope that they can be resolved. Another approach
would be to look at SDDM, as the KDE tools tend to be quite
configurable. I haven't used it myself, though, so I don't know if it
can do what you need.
GDM has been so severely stripped of features on the road from v2 to
v3, so it is unlikely to be useful.
