Threading is handled by email headers which are present but not normally
shown (in particular the References and In-Reply-To headers). Some
email clients allow you to view all the headers (in Evolution for
example use C-u). Reply operations always preserve these and they're
very difficult to get rid of in most email clients.

The simplest thing to do is click on the mailing list email address
itself in the "From" line, not the Reply button, which (in most email
clients) will open a brand new email to that address.
