Can anyone give me a hand with this?

Now that I have completed the rebuild of the River Country Radio Studio, this last week I am ready to tackle the project of why I am unable to FTP or SFTP into my site. The server is setting in my closet behind me. I just tried to transfer a file from my documents on this computer to my site through FileZilla and get this message - 

/var/www/mikealrhughes.com/public_html/feed.gif: open for write: permission denied

Error: File transfer failed

Any help ideas of what to do appreciated. my user name is macmike and I can sudo on in terminal mode. I also can't log in via FileZilla as root.
