Sound card not working?

I'm running Xubuntu 14.04 on an AMD/MSI base where the m/b sound recently
just went dead. i played with all the audio controls in the pulseaudio gui
and got nothing. The only help was to play sound through my DVI monitor
speakers, which suck, and then to plug my (new) speaker set into the
monitor headphones jack, which works, but see below.

This is a pathetic substitute for real sound from the cards in the computer
(mobo built-in and, now, this add]in).

I bought a Creative Labs Sound Blaster Audigy SE card (after getting new
speakers which it turns out I don't need) and installed in in the mobo.

I still get no sound other than through the monitor.

I have lots of new devices in the pulseaudio volume control configuration
tab, but none of them produces a shred of sound.

I googled for potential solutions and nothing seems to fit or work.

I'm not sure which one, if either, is the new card, which is the onboard
audio and which is the DVI (monitor).

What do I need to get the system to recognize and use the new sound card?

Thanks.
