Ubuntu 14.04.2 VMware guest screen resize

Hello,

I'm trying to get Ubuntu 14.04.2 running as a guest in VMware to do
automatic screen resizing. I've tried installing open-vm-tools, which
according to the community wiki, is supposed to be sufficient. I've
also tried installing vmware-tools provided by VMware.

The screen resolution defaults to 800x600, and I can change it
manually in Ubuntu's display settings, but the automatic resizing
doesn't work.

Am I missing something, or is there a workaround?

I'm pretty sure this used to work out of the box not too long ago.

I am using VMware Fusion 7 on OS X Yosemite.
