1) You have two areas to troubleshoot for random crashes: software and hardware. I haven’t seen you mention what you’ve done so far, but be sure to do these things to test your hardware:
2) Run memtest86 or memtest86+, and let the tests run overnight. Or at least several passes.
3) Read the SMART info from your hard drives. Look for reallocation events and g-sense errors, and the like.
4) Make sure the fans are running, and that the PSU is blowing air out the back.
5) If the system is 3 or 4 years old, visually inspect the capacitors on the motherboard to see if any are bad. (no need to physically touch them, and be sure to unplug the power cord)
6) And as a last resort, try swapping the PSU for a new one of proper wattage.
Should it pass these tests, then its stable enough to start compiling.
