Sorry, no - I read dozens if not hundreds of posts about it. Many were
from people who incorrectly thought everybody was behind NAT, and just
as many from people who incorrectly thought everybody was on a public
IP, and lots more from people who had no idea how FTP worked and still
less idea about how PASV worked...

My take on it after a lot of looking into it is that this is about some
servers either not supporting MLSD or incorrectly supporting it. That
the ProFTP server does either is pretty surprising and in fact the
biggest argument against me :-) But really, that's not the point.
Clients should do whatever it takes to talk to servers, even slightly
broken ones, and should fall back to older primitives if they have to.
This is doubly so when maintaining existing software - programmers
should not add/modify stuff that breaks existing functionality. The new
stuff should be optional, even if it's the default.
