I recently switched from Avast to Avira on Windows, because Avast was
sucking up too many resources and slowing down my PC. Avira has worked well
for the last few months.
By the way, there are a few alternative, free to use virus definition
databases you can add to Clamav called Unofficial Signatures.

Some of the 'sigs' are provided by Sanesecurity.com. Be careful though, some
of the databases are too aggressive and cause false positives. I've had to
tune it by disabling a few of them.
