I could think of two possibilities:

1. Both drives are USB devices and sda is unplugged after some time.

2. There is only sda, connected via USB. After a partition from sda is 
mounted, the drive is replugged (*) and it becomes sdb because sda is 
still in use (even though it is gone). This situation would also be 
consistent with a previous mail where sda1 could be mounted but later 
there was no device sda.

(*) This might happen unintentionally due to a short power dropout of a 
bad power supply.
