New sound difficulty - SOLVED

It seems that the problem was a 3.14 kernel I thought I had ditched
but was still the primary boot OS on my machine.

Once I noticed that and switched back to the latest release kernel
(3.13.0-57), the sound came up fine in all areas.

Hope that helps anyone else who sees this problem.

(FYI, I switched to that kernel because the 3.13.0 kernel does not
seem to like AMD processors and I had no end of trouble with that
since upgrading to 14.04.  I now have an i7 and almost everything
works fine.)
