Thanks! SOLVED. Sort of.
I had already discovered that my monitors have earphone jacks that work
okay. I was at first unable to get sound from my mobo, but found that just
the "line out" jack is dead. There is sound coming from REAR, LEFT and
RIGHT. I'll have to find out what happened to line out, but REAR seems
quite usable, since my inputs are all ordinary stereo and not surround
sound.
Having found this out, it seems that it's impossible to have both the HDMI
and the mobo sound at the same time. If one is working I can choose
configuration settings at will for the other without effecting any change.
But if I leave that other one enabled and disable the first (select OFF in
pavucontrol Configuration), suddenly sound starts going to the other
destination and stops going to the first one, even though the first one is
still marked as before. I did not expect this, but it's entirely workable
for me, if a bit unintuitive.
What I'm left with is probably some sort of hardware glitch, which may not
even be worth fixing.
