I didn't read the complete mail and simply marked it as read.

However, if Ubuntu can't start regarding graphics issues, then changing
the VM or waiting for another guest upgrade isn't the right way to go.

How about booting the Ubuntu guest, log in tty1 and to start trouble
shooting?

In tty1 [1] run

grep EE /var/log/Xorg.0.log

also check the log file of the display manager you're using [2].
