i recently had the opportunity to migrate off older hardware to a newer
mobo, 8-core CPU, newer video. Because all the hardware had changed, I
preferred doing a clean install rather than a clonezilla approach.
1. I performed a fresh install onto the new hardware off CD.
2. put the new system on the LAN
3. Using aptik, i backed up the packages I had installed on the old
hardware. By copying over the data file to the new system, I was able
to get a fresh install of all packages on the new hardware.
4. Rsync -avP brought user data (home directories) from the old system
to the new
5. I brought over files in /etc such as hosts fstab (for NAS nfs mounts)
6. I had to build some software from source, easier if you are neat and
keep your sources in /usr/src or in one place
7. Now is a good time to back up the system with clonezilla
8. Having the old system on-line for a short period of time with the new
system was a good way of picking up odds and ends I had left out
aptik was the only noteworthy step in the process and it worked very
well for me. i saw it in:
