I will, eventually, add more disks, but for now I just need to make
sure that the disks can be read on a Linux system. From what little I
know, FreeBSD seems to have some support for ext-filesystems, but that
would probably not be ideal as they would primarily be in a BSD
machine. As a start I could use ufs, which Linux also supports, but at
some point I am going to need ZFS features.

An alternative could possibly be to add an extra disk just for
transferring data and format it with ufs, but that would be cumbersome
and cost money. And eat up a valuable SATA port.

I don't know either, but I believe the BSD's use disklabels like
Solaris, so I guess I'll just have to try it with some non-important
data.

That wouldn't be a problem.

Yes, if anyone knows if the disk formats are compatible, and if disks
with ZFS can be reliably interchanged between BSD and Linux systems, I'd
be very interested to know. Maybe there is a ZOL mailing-list I can ask,
I'll check this out.

Thanks for your answer, though.
