12.04 update problem - software re "hardware" update

First step:

sudo -s
cd /etc/X11
mv xorg.conf xorg.conf.backup

Then reboot:

shutdown -r now

If you had specific graphics drivers or something that no longer work,
this sets them aside. You're renaming the config file for X11 -- the
window server -- so that it will start with a default config and
auto-detect its graphics card config.
