Cannot open blank DVDs under 14.04

Thanks for your reply Pete.

I wondered  about the DVD-ram too. I haven't got any CDs, I'll see if I 
can find some tomorrow. I'll also look up the specs on the drive and see 
if it should write to DVDs.
