Reactivate the Network Manager

As usual your advise showed a clear path to the solution of the problem.
But ...
I get TWO Network Manager applets instead of one.
It all started out that way. When I tried to remove one, a whole bunch
of indicators vanished.
They are now back, but there are 2 nm applets, 2 battery applets and 1
or 2 things more I do not need.
As it is, I can have either TWO applets .. or none.
To my mind, that is not very smart.
Can this be related to the fact, that the PC in question supports both
32 and 64-bit systems?
Is there a way to convince the computer that I need only applet for each
thing?
