sudo apt-get dist-upgrade never[*] upgrades between versions.

[*] never, as long as you don't change the codename in /etc/apt/sources.list [**]

[**] don't change the codename in /etc/apt/sources.list by hand, use
update-manager or do-release-upgrade if you want to upgrade between
Ubuntu versions.
