So lets see what ypu get for an:

/sbin/depmod --version

The above batch of errors are likely what you get when running it as a 
normal user.  I get only the first error and it bails out.

With or without the sudo in front of it, it should return something like 
this:
module-init-tools 3.11.1

Yours may be a higher version number as I am on a 10.04.4 LTS install 
here.
