The latter one.

Sorry for not being clear enough in my descriptions.

I tried that. At first I got the same error:
E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure
-a' to correct the problem.

Then I tried
'sudo dpkg --configure -a'
again. This time "something" happend.
After that I tried those "update" and "upgrade" things. They seemed to
work too.

To be sure, I went through ALL the sudo things you recommended one by
one. This time there were no errors.
That red icon at the top of the screen is also gone, Software-Center and
Package Manger do load.
Much better!
However, the screen is and remains grey, does NOT respond to right
clicking and
Setting -> Display -> also does not respond.
Since this is NOT the way it is supposed to be, there still must be
something wrong.
(I did not try anything else yet, since just sneezing in the vicinity of
the computer seems to send it over the edge ...)

Should I open a new thread for that?
