You weren't able to rename the file?

I know it is not The Linux Way, but after something like this
(renaming/changing the /var/lib/dpkg/status file), I'd just reboot the
system to make sure the OS "noticed" the change.

So either it's corrupt or damaged, or it needs one.

OK, so it needs one. That suggests that it's damaged. I would do:

cd /var/lib/dpkg
sudo cp status-old status

... to make a new one from the backup, while retaining the backup
(just in case).

Then reboot, then try again.

Well, yes -- that is what dpkg does!
