Gary,
I just saw your mail. I have now upgraded ans wine is running as 
expected so all is OK. However, the error I had was simply a 
¨misalignment¨ between 2 library versions. The older ubuntu version 
(precise) had a younger library version than the current ubuntu version 
(trusty). And that confused the updater.  So I agree with you: it is an 
update bug,
