If you have problems with new releases -- kernel issues etc. -- then
there is a fork of Lubuntu that I have used successfully on some old
machines.

It's called LXLE, meaning "LXDE Life Extension".

The 12.04 version of Lubuntu was its first full release, therefore
still a bit immature and not yet an LTS. LXDE extends support to
Lubuntu 12.04.

There's also LXLE 14.04 if your hardware is OK with modern kernels but
is low-end.

I tried LXLE 14.04 and 12.04 on an old IBM Thinkpad X31 from 2004.
14.04 works (when 12.10 and after didn't), but with problems -- no
wifi, suspend/resume is broken, etc. 12.04 works flawlessly.
