If you like and miss the old GNOME 2 experience, might I suggest Maté?
There is an unofficial remix now:

Maté scores because it does not need hardware accelerated 3D, which
GNOME 3 does, even GNOME Classic. (Fallback Mode has indeed been
removed in recent versions.)

I do not use it myself -- I prefer Unity to GNOME 2 and GNOME 3 -- but
those who do like it.
