OK, today's updates added a new kernel (3.13.0-30-generic #54-Ubuntu
SMP). Booting into that gave the same problems with suspend (I
checked the syslog & the "Device 0000:01:00.0 failed to suspend async:
error -16" was the same).

I rebooted into the older one (3.11.0-23-generic #40-Ubuntu SMP
again), & suspend works now. The xserver-xorg-video-nouveau package
was installed on 2014-06-19 (version 1:1.0.10-1ubuntu2) as part of the
upgrade to Ubuntu 14.04, & hasn't changed since. So it seems to me
that the combination of new (i.e., 14.04) kernels & the new nouveau
doesn't work on my system, but the combination of the old kernel & the
new nouveau does. Weird.
