I felt moved to follow up with this to say that 14.04 has been a VERY good
release for me. That's on this particular netbook, and especially compared
to 13.10 and 13.04. None of the releases has been perfect, but 14.04 has
been, overall, very good.

I have been waiting for 14.04.1 to upgrade my office computer from 12.04. I
might anticipate some strange problems with my old Dell desktop's ancient
video (likely, actually; in 12.04 I have to force it to use Unity 2D) but
based on my testing I don't expect any other serious issues.

No matter what you use there could be issues. On this netbook I tried
several different desktop environments under 14.04 and have chosen Lubuntu
over the stock Ubuntu (unity) desktop because the netbook has only 2GB RAM
and that's just not quite enough to be comfortable for the way I use it.
Opening lots of tabs in Chrome, for instance, makes everything unusable.

All that to say, "Your Mileage May Vary."

Give it a try! Then test and try different options.
