Have you ever heard the expression "changing the tires on a moving car"?
Some people use that phrase to explain what it's like to replace parts of
your system while it's running.
Linux systems and the apt package manager do an amazing job of keeping
track of the software while updates are happening. HOWEVER when you are
doing some kinds of kernel updates, you will notice the update manager will
tell you to reboot your system when it's done. Until you reboot, the system
is in an "indeterminate" state, with parts of the old system still running
but the new system files are ready to become active. Much of the time
application updates don't require a reboot, but you might need to restart
the particular application if part of it was replaced.
You probably had a situation where LIbreOffice was using parts of the
kernel that were being replaced, and the old parts were gone and the new
parts weren't accessible yet.
I suggest you look at the updates before applying them and when you see any
changes to the kernel coming through, OR changes to the applications you
are currently using, wait until you are ready to close out the applications
before applying the update because you will want to reboot (or restart the
applications) as soon as the update is done.
