I would lean against the OpenSSL update (in particular) breaking your
machine.

Firefox uses Mozilla NSS in lieu of OpenSSL and is typically statically
linked in most distributions. Chrome also uses NSS.

Can you post the output of "ldd /usr/bin/emacs"?
