microphone issue in Xubuntu 12.04

I created a user (no guest existed) and logged in.  I changed to Pulse
using gstreamer-properties and it worked on sound recorder and skype.  So
the problem lies in the user.  Should I remove and reinstall Pulse?  What
would be the best way to do that?
