Multiple CD/DVD Drives

>From about 2000 to 2010 we used data CDs and DVDs to store daily reports and other backups.  Now they want to import it into a new system.  My thought would be to setup a pc with lots of DVD drives.

I am guessing we would have to use USB drives.  Maybe like 10 to 20.

My thought was to write a script that would go through each drive in a queue and use cat to move the data.  

The backup system was a kludge and has certain data (user, reason, etc) physically inked on the label of the disc, so I would need to track which drive which disc was put in.

Does anyone have any advice on making sure each drive always gets mounted with the same label?
