Phil,
I'm on 12.04 (LTS) and since - I think - November, I have the same 
problem. My 12.04 is fully updated
(3.2.0-58-generic #88-Ubuntu SMP Tue Dec 3 17:37:58 UTC 2013 x86_64 
x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux) So I have the sneaky suspicion that some kernel 
update is the culprit but I - just as you - can not find anything in the 
logfiles.
