I suspect that the scanner Don is referring to is a document scanner
like the Epson DS-30. This is neither a hand scanner or a flat bed
scanner. I have one of these, it works very well. However it does not
and probably never will, work with Linux. Epson supplies twain drivers
and a version Abby Sprint that installs and works very well with Windows
XP (and probably works with Vista, 7 and 8).
To the best of my knowledge there is no useful OCR software for Linux.
If you want to be able scan directly (or even indirectly) to text, there
are NO Linux solutions. The closest you can come is to try and install
the software in an XP virtual machine, assuming of course that it will
see your USB connected scanner.
With Linux, I'm afraid this is a lost cause!
